Tyler beat his deadline by a hair’s-breath. Kicking back in his chair, he called his team members, checking to ensure that they were all on schedule and ready for the job Friday in Las Vegas. They were.

He decided to drive to Midnight Dreams. He didn’t try to deny that the reason was to see Jana. He’d missed her. When he came downstairs this morning, she had already left.

He was on the walkway leading to the garage when he saw Jana heading for the stairs leading to her apartment. She was sobbing. His heart jumped into his throat. He glanced wildly around for Olivia before running to Jana.

“What’s the matter? Where’s Olivia?”

Jana fought against his hold, shaking her head. Realizing she was hysterical, he shook her. “Jana, where’s Olivia?”

She shuddered, her head remained downcast. “At the shop.”

“What happened? What is it?”

She pushed against his hold. “Let me go.”

“No! Not until you tell me what’s going on.”

“It’s over. My past finally caught up with me,” she said.

“You’re not making sense.”

She pushed ineffectively against him again. “Ask Priscilla Haynes. She would be happy to explain everything to you. She had everyone at the store hanging on every word.”

His stomach knotted, but he didn’t let her go. “I’m asking you.”

She looked up at him, her dark eyes flared. “All right, I’ll tell you. Any man with the right price can have me and I’m never cheap. You could never afford me, Tyler. I thought it was ironic, my line of work now, considering all the time I’ve spent in bed.”

Tyler let his hands fall away from her.

Her laugh was ragged. “Didn’t want to hear it after all?” She turned around. “It won’t take me long to pack and you can fumigate the place.” She ran up the stairs to her apartment.

For a long moment Tyler couldn’t move. He’d always known she was hiding something dark in her past, but hadn’t dreamed it was that. Sure, she’d initially come on to Julian and him, but not once since then had Tyler seen her act inappropriately with any man. If anything, she tended to avoid men when she first began working at Midnight Dreams.

His thoughts veered to Olivia. Priscilla was status-conscious and could be vindictive. He threw a glance toward Jana’s closed door and started toward his truck.

He was halfway to the garage when Olivia pulled up. By the time he reached her she had gotten out of the SUV.

“You know,” she said.

His gut clenched. “Jana told me.”

Olivia placed a hand on her arm. “The person Priscilla described is not the woman we both know.”

The knot in his gut eased. “You don’t have to convince me. Come on. She’s packing.”

“She can’t leave,” Olivia said, her brow creased with worry.

“She’s not,” Tyler said, heading for the stairs. Without knocking, he opened the door.

Jana, her suitcase in her hand, stopped abruptly on her headlong flight out of the apartment when she saw them. “Come to fumigate already?”

Tyler ignored her baiting words. “Running away won’t solve anything.”

Jana tossed her head.
